Tea Tree

Melaleuca alternifolia

Responsibly sourced

Tea tree is native to coastal Australia and has been used traditionally by Aboriginal Australians for thousands of years, who crushed leaves and applied them directly to skin. Its primary compound, terpinen-4-ol, is one of the most studied botanical compounds for skin care applications. Used as a carefully dosed essential oil (not infused) in Bug Bite Balm, where its concentrated character is most efficiently delivered.

Did You Know

During World War II, tea tree oil was included in the standard issue first aid kit for Australian soldiers serving in tropical climates — one of the earliest documented uses of a botanical in military medical supply.

Our Sourcing

InVine uses steam-distilled tea tree essential oil sourced from trusted suppliers with verifiable terpinen-4-ol content. Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is native to coastal New South Wales, Australia, and cannot be cultivated in our Florida garden — like all our essential oils, it is carefully sourced before use. We add it at the finish of the formula rather than infusing it, preserving the concentration of its botanical compounds.

Why We Use It

Tea tree is the one essential oil in the Bug Bite Balm, and it is there for a specific reason the whole-herb infusion cannot replicate as efficiently. The terpinen-4-ol needs to be at a meaningful concentration level — the kind a slow oil infusion alone cannot reliably deliver. So each element has its role: the whole-herb infusions provide the soothing, skin-conditioning base; the tea tree essential oil provides concentrated botanical depth. Purposeful formulation means knowing when an essential oil is the right tool.
