Virgin coconut oil is pressed from the fresh meat of Cocos nucifera without bleaching or deodorizing, which keeps its natural fatty-acid profile intact. It is built around medium-chain saturated fats — especially lauric acid — and is solid below about 76°F, so it does structural as well as conditioning work in a balm. Where olive oil is liquid and penetrating, coconut oil is firm and skin-softening; the two are complementary rather than redundant.

Our Sourcing

Coconut palms need a true tropical climate, so this is another ingredient we source rather than grow. We use certified organic, unrefined virgin coconut oil — never the fractionated, deodorized version that has had its medium-chain fatty acids stripped out. Its high saturated-fat content also makes it naturally resistant to oxidation, which matters in a small-batch formula made without synthetic preservatives.

Why We Use It

Coconut oil is the other half of the base, and we use the unrefined, virgin grade on purpose — the cheap fractionated kind has had the good part removed. It gives every balm its soft, melts-on-contact body without synthetic thickeners, conditions skin in its own right, and resists going off on the shelf. Paired with olive oil, it's why our balms feel the way they do: firm in the jar, gone-soft the moment they touch skin.
