Holy Basil (Tulsi)

Ocimum tenuiflorum

Holy basil — known as tulsi in Ayurvedic tradition — is one of the most revered herbs in the world. Unlike its culinary cousins, Ocimum tenuiflorum is defined by its adaptogenic profile and rich content of ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid, and eugenol. Its aroma is distinctly clove-like and slightly peppery, quite different from sweet or Thai basil. In both traditional Indian herbalism and modern herbal practice, it is valued for its skin-conditioning qualities and its long history as a botanical of great significance.

Did You Know

In India, tulsi is considered so sacred it is often planted near temples and home entrances. The Sanskrit word 'tulsi' means 'the incomparable one' — a nod to its unmatched standing in Ayurvedic tradition.

Our Sourcing

Holy basil is grown in InVine's Florida garden, where the warm, humid climate closely mirrors the herb's native South Asian habitat. We harvest leaves just before flowering — when ursolic acid and essential oil content peaks — then dry them gently before a slow infusion in cold-extracted organic oils.

Why We Use It

Tulsi was the first herb I grew that I felt something from just by being near it. That sounds unscientific, and I recognize that — but the adaptogenic tradition around this plant is 3,000 years old for a reason. I planted it because of its Ayurvedic reputation and kept growing it because of how it behaves in a formula. It does not announce itself the way peppermint does. It settles. In the Basil Body Butter, it works quietly alongside the other basils to give the formula a grounding quality that I think makes the difference between something that smells nice and something that feels like it's actually doing something.
