Thai Basil

Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora

Thai basil is a distinct variety of Ocimum basilicum with a characteristically anise-like, slightly spicy aroma driven by estragole rather than the eugenol dominant in sweet basil — giving it a different yet complementary aromatic profile. It is a cornerstone herb in Southeast Asian cuisine and traditional herbalism, valued for its aromatic complexity and skin-conditioning qualities. Thai basil is notably more heat-tolerant than sweet basil, making it an ideal summer producer in Florida's intense growing season.

Did You Know

Unlike sweet basil, Thai basil holds its flavor under heat — making it as useful in a hot infusion as it is in a bowl of pho or a Thai curry.

Our Sourcing

Thai basil thrives through the height of InVine's Florida summer, often outlasting sweet basil into the peak heat of August. We grow it alongside its basil relatives and harvest the leaves at peak oil content just before flowering, drying them gently before infusion.

Why We Use It

Thai basil earns its place by being the one basil I can count on through the peak of a Florida summer. When sweet basil starts to bolt and struggle in July heat, Thai basil thrives. That resilience matters practically — it extends the basil harvest through the hottest months. But its distinct aromatic profile is the real reason it's in the Basil Body Butter. Where sweet basil is soft and floral, Thai basil has an anise-forward sharpness that gives the formula a complexity and lift I find beautiful. The two varieties together create something richer than either one alone.
